HISTORY OF GOLD

The value of gold has always been rooted in its relative rarity, easy handling and minting, easy smelting and fabrication, resistance to corrosion and other chemical reactions, and distinctive color. As a precious metal, gold has been purposed for coinage, jewelry, and investments, among many other varied uses. In the past, a monetary standard based on the value of gold was often implemented as policy, but gold coins in the United States ceased to be minted as a circulating currency in the 1930s. Globally, the world gold standard was abandoned for a fiat (formally declared) currency system after 1976.*
